Inspired by Mapuche mythology - Treng Treng Vilu 🐍 and Kai Kai Vilu 🐍 These two serpents represent the natural forces that shaped the world.

⛰️ 🌋 Treng treng Vilu was the protector of the land and all that lived on it lived in the land, possessing control over the mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes.

🌊🐟 Kai Kai Vilu looks after the oceans, seas, all of the marine creatures and controls tsunamis and flooding.

Long ago, there were two enormous snakes, Treng Treng Vilu and Kai Kai Vilu. One day, Kai Kai Vilu slithered onto the land, drowning valleys and fields, and destroying the homes of all the land animals. Treng treng Vilu quickly confronted Kai Kai Vilu.

Treng treng tried to save the land by raising it out of the water. The battle between the two giant serpents lasted a very long time.

Finally, Treng Treng Vilu was victorious, but the land was too damaged; Treng treng Vilu was unable to return it to its original form. The land Kai Kai Vilu attacked became permanently separated from the mainland, and now we know it as the Chiloé Archipelago in the South of Chile.

And this is why the people of the Chiloé Archipelago have a very different way of life to those on the mainland. For them, the sea holds much greater importance in their lives, and they have their own unique foods and buildings.
