La Curandera / Healer Woman

La Curandera / Healer Woman

$750.00

The idea of creating a shawl/poncho/kimono-like garment had been looming in my dreams for a while, and I knew the Latin Expo was the perfect place to bring it alive!

It was time to roll up my sleeves and get drawing La Curandera.

The piece holds meaningful iconography that belongs to the ancient cultures of South America - before being invaded and colonized. La Curandera is a healer woman who carries knowledge of medicinal plants; she works with the elements of nature as remedies.

This immersive garment is proof that my reverence for the healing powers of women continues to fuel my creations!

The Andean cross - Chakana - and the Guñelve star from Mapuche culture are symbols that guide the belief system of the indigenous people in South America.

The Sun and Moon belong to Inverted America by Joaquin Torres Garcia. The original sketch challenges traditional, eurocentric world perspectives. It asserts that South America has its own distinct cultural identity, history, and central position.

Besides the symbolism contained in the printing, I designed the garment to be made with a zero-waste pattern - which means there aren't any pieces of fabric ending up in the landfills. As the garment is simple in shape, it wasn’t a big challenge, but I had to plan strategically - I imagine La Curandera will be filling up the big pockets with herbs and potions.

This piece is a reminder that nature holds medicine and the pure intention of our actions contains a blissful spark that has the capability to heal. Also, it’s an invitation to travel back in time, to remember our connection to Earth. Everything is provided by nature, and we can plant it or collect it from our garden.

Printed in lightweight linen fabric, I split the 2 meter illustration into six screens; each section was printed by blending multiple colours.
